Kim-Mai Cutler added,
I was disagreeing with @alisonb916 that this is the future that YIMBYs want. It’s not. Bayview has a lot of the development pipeline concentrated in it for the next 1-2 decades bc few other neighborhoods allow anything.
this is just so bizarre to me. it also plays into the assumption people make about YIMBYs thinking if we just blow up zoning the housing crisis is all solved, donezo! yes exclusionary zoning has to go. but once again, you guys are missing the point in a big big way.
I remain mystified by the context in which you all describe redevelopment in low-income neighborhoods: that developers and their investors do not have agency or motive to capitalize on historically disinvested communities to redevelop to a wealthier, whiter clientele for profit.
a Shipyard community activist said "they are trying to kill us so they can build $2M condos where we used to live." but you all refuse to believe that the pursuit of profit can be racist or classist if a developer/investor is doing it. only homeowners behave that way, apparently.
like for once try to talk about the realities of environmental racism & redevelopment or even just the basic economics of "revaluing black land," as a certain someone put it, IN THAT COMMUNITY. we know you want to upzone the west side but FFS talk about something else for once
Um do you mean like the ... 11,000 word story I wrote on that once? https://techcrunch.com/2015/01/10/east-of-palo-altos-eden/amp/ … I get that you’re a very righteous person who has relocated to SF from Pittsburgh (which I wholeheartedly support domestic migration to the Bay Area and want to make room for it!) but...
watching a number of Bay urbanists going full "well did you know Shanti is a transplant" lately is such delicious irony that I want to bake it into a pie and eat it
