1 negative article/op-ed in your local paper will always get an elected official’s attention. 100+ people trolling their twitter mentions often doesn’t.

The level of dishonesty here is stupefying. ICE didn't exist until 2003. There were borders before that, and they weren't remotely "open." Returning to the status quo ante just means the restrictive immigration policy status quo with different interior enforcement priorities.

We tend to treat steelworkers and coal miners as the classic icons of American middle-class economic decline. We should consider the fates of newspaper workers, too. What comes after newspapers to create solid local news jobs?

  14. I guess it’s good that someone from Thiel Capital finally realizes all of these things. (Every epochal change wrt technology & society causes capitalism to adapt or appropriate some socialist characteristics in order to maintain itself/survive into the subsequent generation.)

Berlin now has now apparently more trade conferences than Las Vegas. Circumstantially this means that global clients fly in (via our shitty airports) to meet us every month. 5 years ago we startups were flying to London 2x a month, now it's more like 1x every 6 months.

At the ICE facility I visited, I met a woman from Mexico who has lived here for 18 years. She called 911 after her husband brutally beat her. They turned her over to immigration authorities. She now fears deportation. She has 3 kids. There should be no agency with this mission.

There are too many stories to write on any given day. “Finding” them isn’t hard: they fall from the sky, pop up in my inbox, and my phone is buzzing all day long. It’s choosing which ones to cover that’s the challenge.
