The annual drills already had been cut back to facilitate diplomatic efforts with North Korea. But Esper expressed confidence that the allies will “remain fully ready to deal with any threats that we might face together.”
Esper also called on South Korea “as a global economic powerhouse” to pay more for its own defense as the allies remain stuck over a lapsed cost-sharing pact.
