But identifying these patients early is key, as mortality benefit if goal-directed therapy started earlier! Nice article highlighting this issue of defining sepsis in Pediatrics /fin :

I find mental status often preserved more than in adults (or hard to assess) & cap refill much more helpful in kids. Knowing sick vs not sick in Peds is incredibly hard to describe— “they just don’t look right” doesn’t suffice for a Peds severe sepsis definition.2/

Back on . Putting aside the controversy over how to measure sepsis in adults with Sepsis-3, is particularly problematic to define in kids, eg pulse particularly affected by fear/pain/fever/dehydration— lots of kids with fever and a viral URI could qualify! 1/

Last Thursday my husband witnessed a MVA on Lakeshore Dr and stopped to give CPR, as did an unknown RN and doc. Proud of all of them, and would love to thank the Lurie folks in person— can anyone connect me with them?!

For those on NMH campus, grab Drs Khalilah Gates or Mobola Campbell-Yesufu. Dr Gates has a great PowerPoint summary of the literature to date that’s excellent.

One topic I’ve been doing a deep dive into the literature— implicit bias against URMs. This is a really thought-provoking article, that certain words are used for Black vs white students, even when controlling for Step 1 scores:

Prepping for another Gen Med faculty meeting, this one= examining what we (don’t) know about writing Med Student Letters of Rec. Any burning questions from the Twitterverse that we should discuss as a group?

This is my mom. She immigrated without knowing the language, isolated from her family. She raised 2 kids & later worked her way through a masters & PhD, and here she is working in her lab on a Saturday.

Appreciate Dr Khalilah Gates running through a summary of bias and importance of us as educators to prioritize equity to move medicine forward.

My PALS instructor reminded me that 2 yrs ago my husband had to bring my baby to the hospital to be fed during my training (my babies awful at taking bottles). Unspoken obstacles to being a woman in science.

Really interesting and something I didn’t realize was occurring here— stopping lead aprons. I just take it for granted that we don’t use lead on the floors.

Nice pearl! Encountered an ingestion during residency once. Nearly missed it except the patient admitted it later in the interview.

Horrified by the hate & threats Dr. Baldwin and her practice are receiving. Forever grateful for all the doctors who continue to speak out about the undeniable importance of vaccines, despite the despicable backlash they too often receive.

Will catch up on pearls, but wanted to give 👏 to consultants who not only answer our specific question & are curious about the underlying issue. Dr Taher Valika took time to review case with speech & walked me thru his dx reasoning.Really helped the case!
