Spitzer, our youngest Great Observatory, came on the scene in August 2003. Very quickly after it launched I was excited to be able to work with their gorgeous data....and if you know me at all you'll know that means supernova remnants ranked high on the list to explore.pic.twitter.com/KBo9VSgpZ3

Two famous supernova remnants, Cassiopeia A and Kepler's SNR were some of the first ones we had lovely Great Observatory composites on. https://chandra.si.edu/photo/2004/kepler/ … https://chandra.si.edu/photo/2005/casa/ …

The famous Crab Nebula! By combining Infrared, X-ray & Optical data, scientists get much more bang for the buck. Certain structures and processes, driven by the pulsar engine at the heart of the nebula, are best seen at particular wavelengths. https://chandra.si.edu/photo/2018/crab/ …pic.twitter.com/aFP5KMUcH6

Beyond my favorite SNRs, Spitzer has helped peer into the center of our Milky Way. Spitzer data (red) shows radiation/winds from stars create glowing dust clouds that exhibit complex structures from compact, spherical globules to long, stringy filaments.pic.twitter.com/w4Wc6MR6Ns

Hubble data (yellow)=outline the energetic regions where stars are being born & reveal 100s of 1000s of stars. Chandra X-rays (blue/purple)=gas heated to millions of degrees by stellar explosions & outflows from the supermassive black hole in the galaxy's center.pic.twitter.com/HsLbEoYvbP

Of course, clusters of stars are fantastic as well. Cygnus Ob2 shows many including young stars ranging in age from one million to seven million years. Optical light from INT in blue, X-ray red/purple & IR orange. The sum is greater than the parts. https://chandra.si.edu/photo/2019/20th/ …pic.twitter.com/hron41kRUn

I am curious, why isn't it going to be used anymore?

There's a helpful piece on the Spitzer site here:http://www.spitzer.caltech.edu/news/2166-ssc2019-10-How-NASA-s-Spitzer-Has-Stayed-Alive-for-So-Long …
