🌌What does our Universe look like in many kinds of light? This is galaxy M82 in X-ray, UV, optical & IR. ✨Teachers, students, astrophoto fans, capture your own real-time telescope data of M82 w/ robotic telescope network or work w/NASA data:

Happening now:  all remaining science and engineering data have been downloaded from the telescope. Mission Control is now preparing to put Spitzer into safe mode.

If you'd like to explore some of the data sets I mentioned in this thread, check out our openFits project with step by step instructions on how to work with multiwavelength data: See you in the archives, Spitzer!

I really can't do Spitzer (& the talented team behind it) justice in a few tweets. Spitzer's robust data archive will live on of course, so Spitzer will never truly go dark. From finding distant worlds to exploring stars near and far, there have been so many discoveries...

I can't forget those huge cities of stars, galaxies that are far far away. M82, Antennae & Whirlpool are a few special data sets that have combined the power of the great observatories+ to incredible effect:

Of course, clusters of stars are fantastic as well. Cygnus Ob2 shows many including young stars ranging in age from one million to seven million years. Optical light from INT in blue, X-ray red/purple & IR orange. The sum is greater than the parts.

Hubble data (yellow)=outline the energetic regions where stars are being born & reveal 100s of 1000s of stars. Chandra X-rays (blue/purple)=gas heated to millions of degrees by stellar explosions & outflows from the supermassive black hole in the galaxy's center.

Beyond my favorite SNRs, Spitzer has helped peer into the center of our Milky Way. Spitzer data (red) shows radiation/winds from stars create glowing dust clouds that exhibit complex structures from compact, spherical globules to long, stringy filaments.

The famous Crab Nebula! By combining Infrared, X-ray & Optical data, scientists get much more bang for the buck. Certain structures and processes, driven by the pulsar engine at the heart of the nebula, are best seen at particular wavelengths.

Two famous supernova remnants, Cassiopeia A and Kepler's SNR were some of the first ones we had lovely Great Observatory composites on.

Spitzer, our youngest Great Observatory, came on the scene in August 2003. Very quickly after it launched I was excited to be able to work with their gorgeous data....and if you know me at all you'll know that means supernova remnants ranked high on the list to explore.

Goodnight & farewell to our fellow great observatory ! Today, in just a few hours, Spitzer goes dark. But for the past 16 years it has helped shine such a (infrared) light on our Universe. Some favorite Spitzer-Chandra-Hubble+ data sets:

Tycho's SNR: This model from Orlando et al shows Tycho's SNR at an age of 1,000 years, after evolving from its current age of 447 yrs. The debris shows a cutout of the interior. While some supernovas leave neutron stars & black holes, this one left an empty shell of material.

SN 1987a: The supernova's expanding remnant offers the opportunity to unveil the physical processes associated with the supernova & the final stages of stellar evolution. This model from Orlando et al shows the remnant in 2017

SN 1006: This 3D model, from a paper by S.Orlando et al, shows the remnant that resulted from the explosion & destruction of a white dwarf star. The model helps explore how the clumping of material & the acceleration of high-energy particles affects the structure of the remnant.
