Q3: Sins of the past incl estimating hrs by phase w/ no documented scoping questions. Have you heard a lwyr tell you why this or that matter can't be used to estimate the $? We don't do a good enough job on capturing matter differences a/k/a scoping ques.

Q3: Depends on the org, the processes and rigor they have put around their pricing approach. Those that I have seen do it well are under one umbrella with clearly defined roles OR when separate, there are checks and balances, alignment on goals and transparency.

Q2: Even more concerning is that we have lead lawyers asking what we mean by SCOPING. It's about alignment between buyer and seller of professional services. Make sure you know what you are paying for and make sure you are clear on what the customer thinks they are buying.

Some firms have built synergy between pricing and LPM but many have not. There may be different skills req'd but they truly need to be run in sync. From my exp, there is value in having both someone with expertise in pricing and LPM participate in SCOPING conversations.

Q1: IMO we have made an egregious mistake in putting so much separation between pricing and LPM. Triple constraint = scope, budget, schedule. Without tightening up the distance between scoping and managing, we lose huge opportunity to get things right out of the gate.

This is awesome. Love “we all need to ask if our solution is a necessary one, or if the problem we are trying to solve is in fact just a symptom of something else.” Thanks for sharing.

While some firms are cutting pay and reducing headcount, there are those who are pressing forward (if not accelerating) on new paths in terms of practice innovation and redesign. C-suite and exec comm who may not have been as involved prior are driving now.

A1: Folks we've talked to in firms and inhouse are getting settled but there are some challenges you should excpect but didn't like people not having good internet bandwidth for video conferencing, requests for printers, having to modify policies for nonexempt employees
