One should not be allowed to read FQ without Things of Darkness! Tropes of blackness are throughout FQ, especially in relation to gender. These days I've been using TofD's discussion of Petrarchism to think about Spenser's fair and dark ladies.

Yes! That’s exactly how I use it: exploring how figures like Una, Britomart, Amoret help to create a category of White Christian womanhood in juxtaposition to Error, Duessa, et al.

And, I should say that it's the best I've ever taught: I've never seen a set of essays like those I received at midterm. And a student wrote that the class he "taught [him] a great deal about empathy, love, and what it means to be a human being."

I'm looking forward to using her bracing chapter deconstructing "fairness" and the racialized subtext of the sonneteering tradition via the Amoretti.
