if what makes you want to make comics is your 500 page epic and nothing else, go for it, but consider taking those characters and making a bunch of little vignette comics. it's just easier to progress in certain areas when you make a bunch of small stuff.

when you look at something from beginning to end, zoomed out, you can really see and analyze pacing, which is hugely important because as comic creators we set the speed at which people experience our work! it also lends itself better to experimenting, which is important

you can play with style, you can play with type, environment, design, color, and storytelling devices in ways that you might not want to in a longer form comic. not that there's anything wrong with that, but we tend to obsess over consistency in our own long form work

anyway, i don't really feel qualified to give a lot of career advice because my support system is way more extensive than the average person's, which has greatly affected what i'm able to do and how. but i think this is something doable and hugely beneficial

and also, if you work a day job, it's probably easier to do small stuff in your spare time? and all of those short comics will give you more stamina and confidence for longer work.

Thank you for the advice! It is kinda intimidating.

i have a lot of trouble switching tasks, so for something like a comic that has so many different moving parts it can be really hard haha. but doing it over and over makes it easier for sure

This is really the best advice you can give, for ANYONE starting out doing comics. Starting on your 1000 pg opus isn’t terrible, but you’ll level up way quicker with smaller works.

Oh yo that's great advice. Wish I'd followed this as a kid instead of "I need to do 3 years of world building and then make 6 volumes of my comic oh wait I never finished any of it"

hahaha, i think most of us have at least one of those. part of why i think it's so important to do smaller comics is you can get stuck in visdev hell forever because actually starting the thing is really, really scary. doing it a bunch makes it less scary
