So 6.3 TB data size reduction. But of course we store two instances, in two data tape libraries, so it’s really 12.6 TB storage cost saving. LTO6 yields 2.8 TB usable capacity, so in one day, using , we saved 4 LTO data tapes. If we repeat each day, one month = 120 tapes. 😍

We now have the auto-generated subtitle data from YouTube for vids & need volunteers to clean it up, otherwise it looks like is listening to bragging about how "we speak Baraka King quail of DPX". DM's open, so if you want to volunteer hmu.

Today's absurd work activity: emulating a VHS repair catalog program from 1996 in DOSBox to get information about belt replacement models for old VHS players Did I mention that I love this job?

Title screen for an old computer program titled PRB Selection Guide, created by Projector Recorder Belt Corporation.

My tamagotchi is OK! There were four poos stacked up, much sickness, hunger and unhappiness but things are looking up!

Thanks to sympathetic commenters, I now realise that tamagotchi is still fairly digipres related content..

I tend to keep my account purely about digital preservation, but I thought that I'd share something personal. I left my tamagotchi at home today and it will die and that sucks. They always die but this was a particularly cute one. OK back to digipres!

There is a strong link between gender inequality and childcare in Ireland. Here I argue for free childcare. Share if you agree.

I really need to write tests ASAP: Upgrading from Python 3.7.4 to 3.8.0 resulted in our accession scripts breaking due to a change in how dictionaries are handled: but this fix handles both versions:

⏲️ As of today, we have about eighteen years to go until the Y2038 problem occurs. But the Y2038 problem will be giving us headaches long, long before 2038 arrives. I'd like to tell you a story about this.

Amazing datasize reduction from the lossless compression in 's .. Source DPX folder = 200GB on disk, cooked FFV1 MKV = 80GB... with £££ saving for storage, reduced network impact for ingest, 1 file instead of 15,000. 😍😎🚀🎇

Updated my 2011-era ffmpeg patch adding support for the CDToons codec, and finally submitted it. It's a QuickTime codec used in many old Brøderbund games and uses *sprites*, which I guess can be size-efficient *and* lossless. I mean, all your source material is 8bpp, right?

Btw the DCI spec is just not detailed enough to do proper qc, we need these to have a greater confidence!

About to buy a bunch of DCDM specs, seems like getting them as ISO standards is much cheaper than from IEEE/SMPTE? Any help here welcome. Getting: Image characteristics, audio characteristics, additional frame rates, audio channel mapping. Any other recommendations?

. has been submitting patches to FFmpeg for the last few years. Noteworthy due to the small number of contributions we get from other large corporate users. Would be good to see others doing the same.
