:^/ How many houses could be built with that lumber? How much pollution would such fires contribute?

Good questions — all of these pallets have previously been used and many of them would have been discarded and recycled. They're chemically treated, so there is concern over the effects of burning so many of them...

... and of course, with this much burning wood, there's a lot of carbon release. It's not great for the environment, that's for sure. However, after the fire burns out, after two days, the mound of ash and nails are composted and recycled.

One could argue, however, that this controlled burning is safer for the community and for the environment than the fires on the street that used to rule the streets every New Years in this community — where cars and tires would be thrown on the fires, too.

Holland has a robust environmental ideology and this certainly runs against that. Can't help but revel in it, though. There's something so arresting about a fire, especially one this massive. Either way, I'm just here to document it.
