This bears repeating: PhDs who end up working outside the academy (for whatever reason) are not failures. The academy has no monopoly on great and important work. There are great success to be had in other sectors. Enough already with the professional elitism.

'When I was younger, I used to reassure myself during suspense movies by silently reciting the proof of some theorem: here, at least, was a certainty that the movie couldn’t touch'. sounds like a very useful thing.

USA has some of the best universities and highest number of Nobel laureates. How did it end up like this? Probably because the high standards of education are siloed and inaccessible to the majority of population.

The real problem is they find it hard to see that finding the areas of square and rectangle involves same procedure. Students always carry two different formulae in their heads. One for square and another formula for rectangle.

Are the terms 'length' and 'breadth' of a rectangle really important? Can't we call them long and short sides or any other names? I see children really sweating it out to identify what side should be length etc.

Inspired by this brilliant thread, I invite thoughts on the failure mode of education, while I posit one- The failure mode of education is MORE e.g. 'curriculum coverage', instead of building the child's innate capacity for learning and kindling motivation for learning

Finding the area of a shape is to calculate how many squares can fit in that area. Finding volume is to calculate how many cubes can fit in a given shape. Can we also express area and volume in unit triangles and tetrahedrons?

Estimation challenge. Einstein might have made the statement that only 12 people on earth would understand the theory of relativity based on the then global population and the % of educated at that time. What number he would have chosen now?

The myth that gifted children can take care of themselves persists because of intellectual laziness! says at the convention. We don't say that an athlete will reach the Olympics by himself or herself!

The shape of the soap film that forms with different end points is infact the shortest distance between these multiple points. Soap film is our tightly 'stretched linen'. The feeble soap film has the strongest force inside it.

When we say as tightly as possible we need a large force. Where do we find such a large force. Intermolecular interactions. We may think that a soap bubble/film is a feeble entity but infact the soap film provides the large force that we need in the case of finding the short path

But if there are more than two points and if we want to know the shortest distance that connects all the points the math becomes more involved but one possible practical way is again take a string and pull it as tightly as possible.

The term 'straight line' comes from 'stretched linen'. In Euclidean geometry straight line is the shortest distance between two points. To figure out this one can take a non elastic string and pull as tightly as possible between the two given points.

I want to demonstrate to my general audience that math is useful. I think Back of the Envelope (BotE) estimations are good examples to make my case. What are your favourite BotE questions that showcase the usefulness of math?
