This is great news. To the best of my knowledge, this is the first professional Society that condemns legal threats attempting to silence scientific criticism. Thank you, Let’s hope some Microbiology Societies will follow.

The hidden part of the lab leak debate is the question whether gain of function research has negative utility and should be outlawed. Security protocols cannot protect against all human error and malice, and first line of defense is quarantine and non-proliferation of pathogens

This is perhaps why ideologues are so often poor storytellers. It requires a local logic which means much of the global arc is not under the storyteller's control.

True in science, as well. Thinking of Kepler's earnest desire for the planetary orbits to be circles - & his decision to give that belief up, when contradicted by observation IIRC errors were of order 2' (in an 8' anomaly), so it was a remarkable decision after years of work!

In a new, intentionally misleading commentary, Nature continues to spin the debate about the origin of Covid-19 into a political instead of a factual question. This is shameful for a leading scientific journal.

In Italian,a Chief Executive Officer is called a Delegated Administrator, which I think is a better term. Not a master of the universe, but a hopefully faithful vessel in which the board pours the will of the owners and any other party with voting rights.

    151. Small Meeting Rooms The larger meetings are, the less people will get out of them. Make the majority of meetings spaces small, for 12 people or less. Ideally, in the most public areas scattered around the workspace.

Package management in Python is easy! Just use conda, virtualenv, venv, pyenv, or poetry to create a virtual environment, then install a package with pip, conda, mamba or poetry, except you have to do that bit outside of Python for some reason.

Des centaines d'articles sans le plus petit sens — et pour cause, générés par un ordinateur — se cachent encore dans la littérature scientifique. Les éditeurs ne semblent pas pressés de montrer que leurs revues sont capables de publier n'importe quoi.

it blows my mind that the books we see published are on shelves because a select group of people (agents, editors, publishers) liked those books based on their personal tastes, like how many great writers don’t get published because the gatekeepers don’t vibe

I’m really proud of this essay, which took several months to write. It’s very far from clear what is! However, after spending time trying to make sense of it, I can assure you that it’s worthy of our close attention and understanding.
