As it happened, I recognized the specific photos in question because I had used them to talk to a class about reading race.
Last year around this time, I saw some photographs circulating as "evidence" of Irish slavery.

The photos, of actual (formerly) enslaved people, are of Black people who are phenotypically read as white.
