Yes watched the video... unfortunately the way i am understanding is the negative is not a part of the equation, though i would see that as -(9^2). Can you understand my students, and my confusion?

The negative is secondary to the multiplication, according to the order of operations. But agree the way it's written is not very intuitive – so totally understand the confusion!
