I’m constantly amazed that most white folks can just move to a place that they can afford & like. They don’t have to worry about people burning crosses on their lawns or how many times their kids might be called n*gger or monkey while playing at the park. Like, that’s incredible.

You see a lake you like and you’re like— I’ll buy a place. No googling hate crimes or for stories about police in the area. Just look at schools. AND THERE ARE ACTUAL PUBLIC SCHOOLS with books and desks and everything.

And for those of you who are like “but you live in NJ, not the Deep South!” or some other myth, here’s an article abt NJ’s racism & domestic terrorism, including a 2008 lawn cross-burning (which happened in my “progressive” town when I was a kid, too).https://www.tapinto.net/towns/sparta/articles/sparta-where-is-our-pride …

Anyway, white people can be like “does this move cut down on my commute? Does it have a good yard?” And then THEY CAN JUST MOVE. I’m just... it’s amazing. Ok, I’m done.

I really love how some of the white folks in my comments are like “we don’t do cross burnings anymore” and completely skip over the screaming racial epithets at Black children in parks part of the first tweet. Also on recent cross burnings: try Google, don’t try me.

Part of the reason I left the tenure track was that I wasn't willing to move anywhere that I would singlehandedly change the demographics of.

We - white people -will usually never get it. It's just not even in our stratosphere when looking for a house. I have worries about being openly queer and trans in a neighborhood, but that's not the same - and even then, my whiteness will offer some level of protection.

I think this every time I read one of those "best places to live in America" compilations. They always leave off the end part, "... if you are white"

THIS. I have lived in a few such places, on all the lists and ... caveats.
