White conservative area. There were a lot of churches around but my parents and I never went, so I never really thought of that. I guess it was pretty religious.

Did you have a specific pledge for your state as well? I remember I got in a lot of trouble for not saying it correctly when I first moved to Texas. It had some heavy religious undertones, and I was uncomfortable with saying the word “God” for some reason.

That makes sense that you'd get busted. I stopped even reciting it altogether at some point because I got grossed out by the idea of this hive minded chant that we all "have" to do for some "reason" It just felt gross to me. We had a similar thing in Greek school too.
