At my school they sent kids to the principal's office if they didn't stand up and recite it. I stopped saying 'under god' and got in trouble for that too

did you grow up in a religious area?

White conservative area. There were a lot of churches around but my parents and I never went, so I never really thought of that. I guess it was pretty religious.

This happened to me as a teenager. I was a dork nerd, not a cool guy, who in high school during the height of the Iraq war, I stopped reciting the pledge and would sit at my desk. I got in trouble constantly for it, but I didn't care. My grades spoke for me (A's and B's) lol

In comparison, at my school in the UK, some kids stopped praying during assembly and one kid told the teacher on them. The teacher told us it was okay for people not to believe in God, and it was completely their choice to do so.
