How do they calculate the average tho? Only from those sufficiently happy enough with their times to submit them somewhere?

Actually you’re right, I went to a pace calculator website just now and I was actually fast for my age group and gender

think about it this way though, the actual average time for running a 5k is infinity, because most of the population would not even attempt to run a 5k!
