Why do all FP and FP-adjacent conferences these days think it's necessary to have condescending presentations about strong typing, etc.?

Have people considered that maybe the utility of FP would come across more immediately if so many presenters weren't smug about it?

@kf I discussed that with a Haskell friend a while ago and the answer was that an example instead would be 'trivial and obvious'. :/

@Argorak I don't understand why FPers, in particular, lean on the side of providing not enough context vs. superfluous context.

@kf @Eigenvariable and others use this term in what sounds like a technical way. I agree it does not sound good.

@posco @Eigenvariable Ah, but did you see the type theory talk at Strange Loop? They did not use it in that way. At all.

@kf I heard something similar at Strange Loop but thought it was a one-off occurrence. Didn't know this was something people regularly say:(

@kf @danluu Agreed, that talk was infuriating. I was so hoping for lessons beyond "more complicated = better than", but alas...

@dijkstracula @danluu I still haven't been to a Scala conf, mostly because I don't want to pay for the privilege of being condescended to.

@kf @danluu Coming from the Scala community, I was shocked (in the best way) at how welcoming the Clojure community at Strangeloop seemed!

@missingfaktor I don't see how adopting the smug title of an academic paper and then expecting people to catch the reference is *better.*
