Let's not lie: the early 3D era of video games was pretty rough. A lot of the landmark games of the 1990s are difficult to recommend now - but we can still appreciate them, through the right lens. This week's newsletter:

Many fond memories squinting on a 4 player deathmatch. Tried it on Switch again, looks good, but the controls... THE CONTROLS! Egad what a nightmare controls were! Totally ruins any type of 'fun' to have with it now. Hate to say it, emu with button mapping is SO much better.

My 12yo often complains of this - loves 8-bit and 16-bit games, the gameplay and the whole aesthetic, but won't touch early 3D stuff.

a lot of N64 games are difficult to recommend because the console was overrated and very underpowered
PlayStation 1 s games are perfectly fine in presentation and some times artistically far better than recent remakes in terms of concept art/colors/lighting etc

"What's with the dogshit controls on Goldeneye?" Was the exact words my brother used the other day

I've been ummm'ing and arrrrr'ing about whether or not to risk ruining my happy memories (and hundreds of hours!) of GoldenEye.
One GREAT example of a Nintendo Switch 'upgrade' was the re-make of Doom in 2016. Absolutely delight and a homage to the 90s version.

You can get used to old graphics or any old control scheme in about an hour, this is a silly generalisation. Old games hold up based on their mechanics - goldeneye doesn’t because it was never that impressive.

I miss co-op split-screen games. Especially a shame now when you consider that a 4K TV effectively gives all 4 players a full HD screen of their own.
