The more people talk about my pinned thread of threads as a "mini-course" on modern American political history, the more it bugs me that it's not arranged in chronological order. So, here it is, with threads sorted together by era.

if there was a car or pencil that had been specifically created to kill as many people as possible in the shortest amount of time I would also argue those things should be banned from public availability. whatever the fuck you decided to call them is irrelevant.

Assault weapons aren’t real. Just like there’s no such thing as an assult car, or assault pencil. Stop blaming objects when the person is at fault.

Sometime after W. Bush said only history could judge him on Iraq, Bill Clinton told me history won't remember almost any of us (even presidents). The responsibility of judging & responding to a leaders' actions, Clinton said, belonged to contemporaries. Durbin's ducking that job.

She is an ongoing embarrassment. As is NBC for paying her $69 million.

So you're saying your side won the debate and got everything you wanted -- guns everywhere, no real regulation or control over who has them at all -- and when the result is the predictable spike in bloodshed that the other side wanted, it's all *their* fault? What the hell?

this is not even the first time the "RWDS"/Pinochet meme has appeared in a mass shooter's repertoire. It was never funny, and it was never actually intended to be. just pure terrorism.

The Proud Boys — chaired by a guy named Enrique Tarrio — fight under an explicit banner of white supremacy. Their founder says anyone can join so long as they agree that white men created western culture. They have POC in their ranks, and they have neo-Nazis. Same team.
Quote Tweet
Also: Seeing a lot of blowback to WaPo and WSJ saying Mauricio Garcia may have had white supremacist ties, given his race. So periodic reminder that there's a long history of POCs advancing and supporting Nazi/white supremacist goals/ideology.

"Martin Luther King Jr. would never have dared to block traffic and inconvenience travelers," I confidently write, revealing I've never thought through the logistics of Selma-to-Montgomery March's procession across 54 miles of state highways for several days.

No "debate" was won. Guns & abortion were 2 issues that 20-30% of Americans held extreme opinions on in the 1970s/80s, & then those anti-abortion and pro-gun extremists managed to get the GOP to toe the line and do their bidding. It was about raw political power, not persuasion.
Quote Tweet
Serious q for gun control advocates: you’ve failed to effect change. Pls face it. You can’t do it, thx to the 2A. We’re all well aware you don’t like that fact, but fact it is. What’s next? Must we just stay here sad, concerned, lamenting? Could we possibly talk OTHER SOLUTIONS?

NEW -- AND IMPORTANT -- If a serial killer or a child molester ran for president, we'd expect to see that fact in every news story about him, right? So why do we almost never read of Trump's attempted coup in stories about *his* presidential campaign?

More to the point, what did he *do*? People trot this quote out as reassurance that things will get better on their own, when of course King worked tirelessly to bring about change

When a pro-gun person says stuff like "that's the price we pay for freedom," what it really means is they see our lives as readily disposable, to be exchanged for the satisfaction of their compulsion to be armed and feel strong in a way their inadequacies would otherwise prevent

Kelly admits that her side “won” the gun debate, and got all the looser gun laws they wanted … … but she wants to blame all the bloodshed that her side’s *huge* victory brought us on the people she says lost the debate and have no influence? No no, you won! Claim your prize!
Quote Tweet
No, YOU F off. I am sick and tired of nothing changing after mass shootings bc we get mired EVERY TIME IN THE DAMN GUN DEBATE. You have LOST. It’s DONE. For the love of God what else can be done? You are ruining any chance at change by not admitting that the gun debate is lost. twitter.com/happycrazytown…

The worst scandal in the 234-year history of the Supreme Court requires more than just a Beltway shrug. This is a 21st century Watergate and let's treat it that way We need political, prosecutorial pressure for Thomas to resign...and more. My new column

it's really actually dangerous to let people like conor completely whitewash the history of protest movements, not just during the Civil Rights Era, but in all cases. because it purposefully delegitimizes the work that's being done by activists today...

Folks are rightfully focused on the ghoulishness of these comments but I want to note that Kelly’s vision of “fortification of soft targets” is one where the US is a garrison state in which we live our lives as if we’re in a war zone. Totally inimical to free society.
Quote Tweet
Mental health interventions (smthg real, not the BS we now do), greater willingness to lock ppl up (w/protocols in place for civil libs) who are deemed to be threats, fortification of soft targets, coordination of media response to not lionize shooters, etc.

Since Twitter is having its annual "why do people protest in ways I don't like /that inconvenience me/that I don't personally find wise?!" discourse, an excerpt from MLK's Letter from a Birmingham Jail. The *point* of nonviolent protest is to create a crisis/tension/inconvenience

Fun fact: this is just not true. In 1964, Brooklyn CORE--who'd been challenging NY housing, school & job inequality with little change--called for a stall-in on highways to the World's Fair. White and Black moderates were horrified & wanted King to repudiate. King said no.
Quote Tweet
Fun fact: Martin Luther King Jr. opposed blocking roadways & transit paths indefinitely because he understood it was more likely to piss people off than convince them. This is an exercise in vanity, not activism. reason.com/2022/07/06/blo

This is a post about a parent choosing to share violent images with the public and I’m a bit baffled by the responses who somehow read this as an argument that *other* people should post violent images and do so *over* the wishes of the parents.

There are many things Betsy DeVos doesn’t know about education, looks like differentiating between a primary source and a secondary source is on the list. This is a skill most students know by 8th grade. Guess she’d get that question wrong on the NAEP.
