    Like I guess I cognitively understand that not everyone has prior experience of their life irrevocably shifting with no possibility of return, and that that's a thing that can just, like, easily happen to you one day, but.

    One night when I was 6 I went to sleep in the house I grew up in, in the Soviet Union. And the next night I went to sleep in a strange hotel in Austria. And in between I lost everything I'd ever known, and there was no going back. And no looking back. Old reality was swiftly over

    You want to save the small businesses that rely on that trade? You want to reboot the urban economy? Embrace it. Convert those spaces back to viable ones for small business and to social housing where possible. Tackle pollution. Get people LIVING in the centre again.

    -style identity verification is a much better approach. there's value in being sure someone is who they say they are, but that can be done by people controlling their own spaces on the web, and using those to say "yes, those other accounts are me."

    This Atlantic article has a really interesting analysis of the episode Key is that they only *seem* to be "speaking in metaphor", but what's actually going on is stranger and more fundamental — a kind of "logic" akin to how video games simulate things.
