On your way out of the parade, stop in Midtown! Businesses are open and waiting for you. Keep the fun going.

What happens first? Chiefs win SuperBowl again, or Iowa caucus results?

Of course I’m curious about the weird stuff today. How does water and sewer hold up? Does that mean we have capacity for a million people downtown? How about ped counts? Scooters and bikes? So much to nerd out on

I’m looking forward to the YouTube video of this, set to music, as a dance routine.

8/ But to throw up our hands and say design isn't important, or beauty doesn't matter - we should be careful what we wish for. We'll simply be creating the next crisis, albeit of a different flavor.

7/ This is not to say we shouldn't have urgency in building housing in places that need it. We absolutely should. Empowering people and markets to be able to build more for themselves is one of the surest ways to achieve that aim, which is why regulatory reform is so important

6/ And it's not like we haven't been down this road before or had "crises" before. The most recent one was after WWII, where we had a huge need for housing. And what we built in that era was mostly very regrettable, and a huge amount was torn down quickly

5/ Beauty and ugliness are both cumulative. When you get enough ugliness, it's overwhelming and depressing, even if you have a place to live. You'll look to leave it if possible.

4/ And if you care about cities and place-making, your view should always be with one eye on the long-term, too.

3/ Without beauty in a place, people will very quickly abandon it for the next shiny object. With beauty, people fight for a place for generations. Simply building anew doesn't help long-term success. Jane Holtz Kay used to describe "cities rebuilt vs cities reborn."

2/ Daniel nails the reason to care about urban design, but it's also important to care about beauty in everything. Beauty is a necessary facet of human enjoyment. It's every bit as important as the other qualities urbanists & advocates talk about.

1/ I absolutely adore this piece by on , and not b/c he mentioned me. Design matters. Beauty matters. A few thoughts to follow, to add to his piece:

Math and science aren't always the right tools. You'd think we know this by now / Mathematicians have solved traffic jams, and they’re begging cities to listen
