D.C.’s crime bill decreases punishments for violent crimes such as carjackings, home invasion burglaries, robberies and even homicides. The rewrite of the criminal code will further tie the hands of police and prosecutors while overwhelming courts. washingtonpost.com/opinions/2023/

This is obviously a great idea but please for the love of god, for once, I would like to go to a hearing where I do not have to argue against means testing. Just once, please.

.@CMBrookePinto has introduced a bill to provide rebates to residents and businesses that purchase electric bikes. The rebates will be targeted for residents below certain incomes. “She beat me to the punch,” joked @MatthewFrumin, who I just saw arrive at an event on an e-bike.

The more details I read about the case, the more I'm convinced the shooting suspect is a well-known and/or high-ranking DC government employee. The preferential treatment is off the charts 📈 #KaronBlake #JusticeforKaron

Asked why the man was not arrested, Contee said Karon died as a result of being shot and said it's up to the medical examiner to determine the manner of death. He said if officers felt they had probable cause to arrest, they would have.

Looks like the DC Council will likely vote to override Mayor Bowser’s veto of the “Revised Criminal Code Act of 2022” (B24-416) at the January 17 legislative meeting. 9 of the 13 CMs will need to support the override for it to be sent over to Congress for the 30-day review period

I stand with my Ward 5 colleague in demanding accountability. I am heartbroken for Karon Blake, his family, and his community. And I am appalled by rhetoric that seeks to justify his murder. The life of a child will always be more important than property.

"Ward 3 came to look the way it did because of intentional policies of expulsion," said Councilmember , of the most affluent ward in the city. "If we want to change that, we have to create equally intentional policies.

🙌🏾🙌🏾 Go, nurses! The rules of the economic game are rigged in favor of the rich. Workers have to fight to make them fair (and we have a ways to go)

BREAKING: NYC nurses strike to end this morning in historic victory as tentative deals were reached with both @MontefioreNYC and @MountSinaiNYC Hospital. Nurses won concrete enforceable safe staffing ratios in both deals and will be back on the job. 🔗: nysna.org/press/2023/bre

If DC Councilmembers truly want to show their appreciation to ANC Commissioners, please allocate funding in the FY24 budget this spring to pay them a stipend! ~$2 million annually would cover $6,000/year per commissioner (i.e., $500/month)! More than fair for all the work they do
Quote Tweet
Ok, how many ANCs do we have now? I'm trying to calculate some NUMBERS that need to be included in the next budget. DC govt need to start paying us for our free labor. 🤔😒 twitter.com/ALGWard7/statu…

DC police typically arrest homicide suspects immediately, even in murky situations with potential self-defense/justification claims under investigation. Maybe this is a better policing practice they should do for everyone, but it’s definitely atypical and preferential treatment.

This is exactly right. Speculation is what happens when there is a lack of public information. Don’t want people to speculate? Be more transparent.

If DC mpd police chief Robt Contee is concerned abt recklessness and misinformation concerning the killing of Karon Blake, a 13 yo, the police is to blame becos they have been so vague from the beginning. What’s the name? Is the gun owner more important than the child he killed?

Hmm, what does this mean for the DCHA bill? The current emergency which was passed 6th, only lasts for 90 days, or early March.

Based on the congressional calendar for 2023, it appears that most (if not all) temporary and permanent bills passed by the DC Council on a second vote in December 2022 should be enacted into law on April 27, 2023 (i.e., the end of the 30-day congressional review period)!

I am confused in what role you are speaking here, as a SBOE rep or DC Council employee

Persons on ATVs recklessly endanger pedestrians on the National Mall & the streets of our neighborhoods & people shrug their shoulders. Revised Criminal Code follows this pattern of reducing penalties, including for illegal guns, during a violent crime crisis in the city. (8/10)
