This is a surprising result. Smokers are far LESS likely to be hospitalized with COVID-19 that non-smokers and it looks robust across countries. Why might this be?https://twitter.com/KlausKblog/status/1249048902495592450 …

Official French data on #tobacco smoking & #covid19 replicate the picture in China, Germany & USA: A remarkable low rate of smokers are hospitalised w/ coronavirus compared to smoking prevalence (France 23%). https://fr.calameo.com/read/0062175782dac24c23c92 … https://twitter.com/KlausKblog/status/1245544033272938496 … pic.twitter.com/8MMMfhriGx

Possible explanation? Nicotine lowers ACE2 expression. (SARS-CoV-2 uses ACE2 for entry into target cells.) https://ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6295500/ …pic.twitter.com/Jg1u0ynUzu

One major New York hospital system that has released its data has a lot more smoking than the CDC data, but notably they have the odds ratio for tobacco use at less than 1.https://twitter.com/leorahorwitzmd/status/1249319859378405377 …

Male sex is still a risk for hospitalization even after adjustment: OR 2.8. Note what is not, though: hypertension (OR 1.2 not sig), COPD/asthma (OR 1.3, not sig), current/former smoking (OR 0.7). Don't understand the smoking results yet, looking more at this.

Hi, Phil. I believe the explanation here is that the smoke itself causes the lungs to increase expression of mucus-secreting cells high in ACE2. ACE2 converts Ang-II (vasoconstrictive, pro-inflammatory) into Ang-(1-7) (vasodilatory, anti-inflammatory). https://twitter.com/TrevorSutcliffe/status/1245431205605953536 … pic.twitter.com/KTCvRUIN2n
