Almost missed 02/02/2020 except my mom texted me a CNN link. I’m happy to notice today’s cool date & I’m also happy that CNN’s algorithm knows that my mom is a nerd.

“This stuff is all programmed by hacks who don’t comment their code” would be a pretty good burn just by itself.

After Kobe’s sad, untimely passing hit everyone yesterday, it did feel a tiny bit weird to completely forget old doubts about his character. So, this is what happened when it WAS brought up! The reporter has to deal with the fallout.

you may know that the ABC song has the tune of twinkle twinkle little star, but did you know you can sing the Greek alphabet to the tune of row row row your boat?

to be clear, even if it’s like: It usually takes you X, it’ll take the junior person 3X, and you’ll spend half of that answering questions that’s still a win because eventually the junior person can do some of your tasks

What are people’s rules of thumb on how long it should take to get someone to do a task, vs doing it yourself? E.g. it usually takes you X time, it’ll take someone junior 3X and you’ll spend X/3 pulling together clear instructions plus X/3 answering questions they have.

I’ve heard of gift cards being used as currency but pre-orders, used as someone’s main currency, is something else.

I have a ridiculous problem: my house is cold. We tried nest, we tried ecobee. both experiences: very bad. Maybe because the temps upstairs & down are different. Any recommendations for a thermostat that’s - very programmable, including responses to sensors? - usable via app? ?

Sounds like this ad-hoc group of pediatricians has a pretty good blueprint now for how facebook etc could reduce abuse!

You know how Jared Diamond kinda makes things up, skips well-known facts (people like Yali were renowned experts not randos) + emphasizes things selectively that support his point? Yet people still love Guns, Germs, & Steel? OK what should I recommend that people read instead?

From 2019: The Girl with Seven Names (2015), by Hyeonseo Lee, about growing up in N Korea and eventually leaving (dangerously!). Really amazing story. Saw a copy at (Books Inc) in Mountain View CA, & eventually went back & got one, I love them!

From 2019: The Word for World Is Forest (1976), by the late . I read a friend's copy while visiting NY. Nice science fiction, but, well, idk if that's how things would have gone.
