there’s something neat about the idea that anybody can download and run code from my little LSH package in seconds from the Julia REPL

Okay I know that literally anybody in the world can publish a package in the Julia General registry but I did it a couple of weeks ago and now I feel very cool and powerful

are you for real. Lapras (ラプラス) is named after LAPLACE???? as in Laplace's Demon? Laplace Transform? Pierre-Simon Laplace?????

Anyways, somebody should write it and publish it. I've been thinking of scrapping together some notes myself and putting them on GitHub but I'm short on time myself so idk when that'll happen 😕

Thanks for the help everyone but I shouldn't have to sacrifice a goat at the altar of nonparametric statistics to figure out that I need a Kolmogorov-Smirnov test for what I'm doing

I know that a book like this would be useful because literally every meeting of my stats lab ends up being somebody asking whether a statistical test exists for X, and a 3rd year PhD student w/ a biology background mentioning some obscure test they used once upon a time

Or they're a little more advanced but overly tied to a specific library, e.g. Scikit-learn. Then I don't really learn anything useful about the benefits/drawbacks of the methods I'm using, plus the book goes out of date really fast.

There are a few books that are similar to this but they all fail in various ways. E.g. they're beginner-oriented but don't provide a holistic perspective, which has probably helped drive a generation of data scientists away from things like kNN towards neural networks.

Each description also briefly describes modifications (e.g. LSH for kNN) and references similar & related concepts. The book's contents are well-categorized and indexed from the start to make it easy to search through.

Code examples (where they exist) are tied to specific libraries as little as possible.

Hundreds of pages listing clustering algorithms, dimensionality reduction methods, ANN architectures, and so on. Each test/algorithm is described concisely in no more than 2-3 pages, preferably less.

There's a book I've been looking for for years now, it seems like multiple authors have gotten close-ish to it, but (AFAIK???) nobody's really written it yet. It's a comprehensive manual of statistical tests and ML algorithms and their use cases.

Every time I teach one of my Python workshops there’s at least one person who seems skeptical of my credentials. Let me put your questions to rest: I am definitely not qualified to be teaching anything and I have no idea who decided that I was.
