Having co-organized a big conference where we worked our asses off to get grants and funding and still struggled and spent months of our time as did a host of volunteers, all to charge $250 and still get lots of complaints - if you were paying the REAL cost it’d be WAY more.
are we just gonna sit here & not talk about academic conferences that require an annual membership to submit, a separate annual membership to present, AND a conference registration fee? I'm over here like boo boo the fool paying over $200 as a grad student to give a 15 min paper

Yes, it’s not a good system for grad students. Their universities need to be funding their conference travel. But my god it costs so much time and money to run a conference. And oh organisers get so many demands and complaints and work so hard.

Can we also talk about the fact that many travel awards/grants REIMBURSE you for these things but I DON'T HAVE MONEY TO PAY FOR THEM IN THE FIRST PLACE AND THAT'S WHY I'M APPLYING FOR FINANCIAL HELP?

I was once at one of these conferences and got to witness people having done all of this plus flown across the world to present only to be told the session had too many speakers so they now only had 7 mins. "Intro and conclusions only please!"

There are lowers fees for grad students, but they should be waved. You all don’t have income to spare, or often, income.

Unfortunately this *is* the “reduced” rate for graduate students and contingent faculty! Two years of membership dues at $63/year and a conference registration fee of $101.
