#BREAKING Multiple sources tell me the Governor’s office has ordered TDCJ to clear out the prisoners from one state prison - Briscoe Unit - so it can hold immigrants picked up by Texas state troopers for low-level charges as part of Operation Lone Star.

It’s not clear yet how many they have already moved there, but previously they said they expected around 1000 total. I have asked if any other units are earmarked for this same repurposing and have not gotten an official response on that.

Does this run afoul of any anti-segregation policies in prisons?

I have a client who was transferred out of Briscoe. 400 mi further away from his mom. Just to make room for this nonsense. It’s the difference between seeing him once a month and… not being able to afford the trip.
He’s 19.

Don't get me wrong, if they are doing this I am glad they are going to air condition the housing units but what's different about this situation that is causing the AC?

This will further drive away people from working as prison guards in Texas. They already lost a lot of personnel from the pandemic. They can't hire new people since they cut the retirement for new hires, and now this. Texas is going to have problems.
