This SO COOL: The new issue of is written & 📷 entirely by people who did time. I am so proud to be one of them. I think this is the best thing I’ve ever written. Here’s the story - about women in jail - and a thread:

At the risk of saying something stupidly obvious...The Trump ad wasn't about "criminal justice reform." It was about him. We can support people's freedom while also knowing this.

  5. The main thing that stands out to me about these poll results is how little people seem to care about DA races; this poll has gotten far fewer votes than I think any other I've ever done. Also, it seems that 8.8 percent of people don't understand what booing means.

Worth noting: Ogg is backed by , whose president/CEO — a former president — was at the meeting today and voted for Ogg.

WOW: The first openly gay DA in Harris County - who’s sparked criticism for months from reformers who say she isn’t progressive enough - just lost the primary endorsement to a Democratic Socialist,

1/7 Beyond the sheer lack of humanity, there is something very odd about the sentence. She was sentenced to 10 months to 7 years for a very low-level felony. This is potentially being done to push her case, & medical care, off the county books and onto the state. cc:

Here's an unhappy news story for your Saturday morning: A PA woman pleaded guilty to stealing $109 of stuff from a grocery store - and was sentenced to 10 mths in state prison. Now, she can't get cancer surgery and is afraid she'll die in prison:

Mind-boggling: the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals found that “Dailey’s new evidence, at most, casts some degree of doubt on some of the testimony the State presented at trial”—yet the federal court rejected Dailey’s appeal. Important story by ⁩:

And here's an updated letter just sent by the . It spends some space detailing a spat with the sheriff's office before clarifying that the DAO intends to do summons instead of warrants, but they wanted more time... and staff. Where have I heard that before.

Here's an example of the sorts of concerns I've heard:

But it's not clear if that sentence in the letter is intended to say EVERY case should work that way, or just those that are determined to merit it. I reached out to the for clarification and have not heard back.

But different counties can implement differently, and the concern I'm hearing is over a sentence that seems to indicate the DA's Office would want charges - and "to-be" warrants for arrest - filed in C&R cases.

Depending on how it's implemented, cite and release could be a way to help people avoid charges and possible jail time. It is something that some other counties in Texas are already doing.
