Just arrived to #F8. I'll be covering all of the VR/AR news from Facebook/Oculus. I'll be roaming around the next couple of days covering the VR/AR sessions, doing interviews, and I have a demo at 1p. The keynote starts at 10a & will be livestreamed here: https://www.f8.com/ pic.twitter.com/zYJx23Q07l

#F8 diving right into how their platform has been misused. They're super committed to building more tech. They're also super optimistic. Talking lots about how relationships should be the center of focus of computing rather than apps (not sure I agree).pic.twitter.com/HBTretQaeU

Facebook admits that they've been very reactive to dealing with state actors doing information warfare to manipulate socities. They're showing spatial timelines focused on how they are now being proactive. Kind of scary that they haven't always been trying to do more.pic.twitter.com/qRgPJRiEeE

All the stuff Facebook is doing to fight spam, fake accounts, and hoaxes. Facebook has consistently avoided ever calling itself a content company, but they're clearly having to make lots of editorial decisions now.pic.twitter.com/mUOZEBkMTK

GDPR has forced new data privacy standards, policies, & tools. But again, it's all been very reactive. Facebook also likes to conflate transparency with privacy. At it's core, Facebook does surveillance-based marketing & tough to resolve business conflicts of interest to privacypic.twitter.com/7JrKKSCPIp

Facebook will be adding Dating to Facebook. Apparently they're going to create de-identified profiles, and you won't see dating profiles of friends. They're somehow going to protect your real identity from being connected. Will they use Big Data to match people?pic.twitter.com/A5gYPqGdmu

Facebook says their primary mission is to connect people by building tools. Yet their advertising business model creates a fundamental split between privacy & free expression while gutting local community advertising. Facebook says that Dating on Facebook will "only use your first name." No mention of option to use completely anonymous name. There is a ritual for revealing your name, and it seems like an odd choice that doesn't feel private at all.pic.twitter.com/SHbGNgaPEn

I'd you make a special AR filter, then your followers will have access to the AR filter. Brands will help mediate & alter people's identity with their own brand identities. Have to follow to get access to the filter. Tons of awesome/terrible immersive marketing opportunitiespic.twitter.com/B87LkKcU0H

Aside: There's a lack of emotional authenticity in these corporate announcements. There was a really awkward conversation with a dog with 8M followers on Instagram. There's a layer of manufacturered emotions that feels fake & weird. This captures that vibehttps://twitter.com/chenbfang/status/991378591958024193?s=19 …
