I've been contemplating if Campbell's monomyth is a Yang Archetypal Journey, & if there's a correlating Yin Archeypal Journey that's always in parallel & coincident. Or if that the yin journey is completely independent & we'll see it more if we define it.https://twitter.com/kentbye/status/971497929318875136 …

Using hero vs heroine's journey can be problematic since we all have masculine & feminine aspects happening at the same time, and it's likely that every story has an outer yang and corresponding inner yin dimension. So hero vs heroine has problematic, gendered language baggage.

You ask a deep question. Whether the Hero’s Journey is inherently masculine is not obvious. If there is a yin version, I would start by finding examples from myth and literature. If there is an equivalent, maybe it is not a journey?

I suspect that the yang elements of fire & air (active & mental/social presence) map to Campbell's monomyth better than the yin elements of water & earth (emotional & embodied presence). This yin journey is inner, esoteric, & more like meditation/yoga in cultivating presence.

Both the yin & yang are always happening at the same time, but Campbell's monomyth tends to emphasize more of the yang aspects. Are there complementary yin aspects that are hidden because we haven't labeled them? Has a patriarchal bias diminished the telling of yin stories?

I try to avoid gender as yin/yang is gender agnostic & essentializing gender is problematic since films like Moonlight seemed to emphasize vulnerability, surrender, & empathetic connection. This essay lists a number of examples that could be yin stories. http://www.vqronline.org/essays-articles/2018/03/male-glance …

.@maya_z00's takes a feminist perspective on Campbell's monomyth. She also tries to lay out and define the underlying patternshttps://m.huffpost.com/us/entry/8270528 …

I suspect that the yin archetypal journey is non-linear, cyclical, embodied, sensory, centered in your own experience, environmental, nurturing, receptive, cooperative, community-driven, worldbuilding, depth psychological, connective, transcendent, esoteric, & alchemical

I actually more and more believe that we need to go beyond these dualistic memes as they lead to a 0=game - I'm all for the none0=game #collectivejourney

I agree we need to get to a sythesis, but I'd argue you can't skip from the thesis to synthesis in the absence of clearly defining the antithesis. Archetypal yin polarity stories are being explored with VR/AR/AI. Let's have it fully articulated & expressed before sythnesizing it.

I also hold the possibility it's ALREADY sythnesized, & clearly defining an yin/yang archetypal journey/expression is a fool's errand as they're holisticly intertwined. But if our center of gravity is yang, then how do you bring more balance? Extreme yin would center the average.
