Here's Maureen Murdock Heroine's Journey Arc compared to Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey Monomyth. Campbell's model is centered on the masculine outward adventure, & I suspect the h Heroine's Journey may be more focused on an inner, sensory journey of emotional development.pic.twitter.com/gM0sfPH6g3

I see MOONLIGHT as an example of a Heroine's Journey centered in embodied experiences & relationships. It's less of a typical hero's journey story & it was qualitatively different. It felt like the ultimate empathy experience of creating symbolic representations of an inner life.

I talked about VR as a feminine/receptive medium in 2014 with @skydeas1. Morie says most of the VR storytellers in the 90s were women. Part of figuring out storytelling in VR is discovering the underlying mythological patterns of the Heroine's Journey: http://voicesofvr.com/72-jacquelyn-ford-morie-on-the-history-of-vr-emotional-experience-mapping-military-simulations-nasa-isolation-training-scent-collar-for-vr-creating-the-holodeck/ …

The underlying tension of politics & technology is the balance of yang/yin, competition/cooperation, masculine/feminine, closed/open, centralized/decentralized. The more equitable distribution of resources cryptonetworks & blockchain has the power to shift to more yin principles.pic.twitter.com/QLpNWUiraH

The dominant forces of political/ economic power are pointing to more & more centralization of power, authoritarian control, & surveillance w less freedom & choices. Are cryptocurrencies a turning point? Can it address disparity & inequalities? Or just reinforce existing powers?

Is there a "heroine's journey" that's distinct from Campbell's Hero's Journey? If there is, then we may have little idea of what that looks yet in a culture and context that has been so centered in male stories and perspectives: https://twitter.com/PamelaPaulNYT/status/970663779368361984 …

.@Millicentsomer surveys women-centered stories & argues that critics are blind to the deeper patterns of women's stories. If there is a "heroine's journey," then perhaps it either hasn't fully emerged in our culture & context, or maybe we can't see it yet http://www.vqronline.org/essays-articles/2018/03/male-glance …

Using hero vs heroine's journey can be problematic since we all have masculine & feminine aspects happening at the same time, and it's likely that every story has an outer yang and corresponding inner yin dimension. So hero vs heroine has problematic, gendered language baggage.

Yang & yin are more precise archetypal descriptions than masculine & feminine or hero & heroine. I didn't mean to essentialize genders in this thread, and I'm considering deleting it all since I don't really mean to conflate feminine with receptive. It's more yin than feminine

Jung talked about the anima as the feminine archetype in men and the animus as the masculine archetype in women. So I firmly believe that every individual has a unique combination of yang & yin that transcends their gender identification.

But I wonder if Campbell's monomyth is specific to a yang archetype or if it's universal? Is there is a complementary yin structure of a mythological journey that's distinct & emerging? Should we look for one? Will there be synthesis that comes from integrating the outer & inner?

Great essay by @maya_z00 who argues that Campbell's monomyth is a predominately male-centric model. She describes an alternative structure featuring more yin qualities of "creation of worlds: children, homes, projects, ideas, empowerment, & communities"https://twitter.com/amoration/status/971512989546237952 …

Agree with you there, and it is fluid. Read @maya_z00 series on the journey as it relates to transmedia, gender and embodiment (many parts, check the whole series for patterns with XR storytellers) https://www.huffingtonpost.com/maya-zuckerman/the-gendered-journey_b_8270528.html …
