I never had a Windows laptop where the touchpad is close to Mac either though, they're either a complete disaster (if 3rd-party drivers are required), or merely suck (when the MS driver is used). Apparently touchpad drivers are rocket science.

Aren't touchpad drivers something the touchpad manufacturer provides? Nothing to do with Windows. Also Apple has limited hw to work with and has figured it out.
-
It is still surprising that NONE of the hardware vendors for non-apple touchpads have been able to get even close to the smooth experience of Apple touchpads. Their hardware or software (or both) is always subpar and it's a pity.

It's the usual annoyance of desktop Linux. Nobody wants to pay somebody to do the last 90% of the polish work. And most engineer cycles seem to be spent either a) supporting old garbage or b) supporting new garbage.
-
If not even a company that specializes on touchpad drivers (Synaptics) can do them properly (see the shitshow that Synaptics is on Windows), I have little hope that this can be done by a one-off code-contribution to Linux :/
-
Yeah that's the trouble, but it's also not something that's out of the question. e.g. if a big tech company wanted to fix it they could quite easily. I wonder what setup the chrome book uses and whether it's any good.

Linux is unix and should be used with a trackpoint and 3 button mouse, I care not at all about trackpads =P
