It's claimed the glacier retreat in recent decades is unprecedented for the last millennia. Ice records show the highest glacier retreat rates of the Industrial Era occurred in the 1930s and 1940s, with a deceleration since. http://community.middlebury.edu/~jmunroe/Papers/35-Munroe_etal_2012_GNP.pdf … https://tc.copernicus.org/articles/12/3311/2018 …pic.twitter.com/VKS6Fb6xEU

There's probably a reason why they're starting their trend in 1968. Looking at this graph of global glacier melt contributions to sea level rise, can you detect why?pic.twitter.com/AsAlv8pGnV

In the 1930s, greenhouse gas forcing was roughly 5% of what it is today. In other words, human-caused global warming should be 20 times greater today. Yet the rate of warming from 1908-1945 almost exactly the same as the last 37 years. Hummm. A lot going on we don’t understand

Yes, similarly, the rate of global sea level rise has been 1.56 mm/yr for 1900-2018, with a rate 1.5 mm/yr from 1958-2014. Notice from the 2020 paper that the glacier melt contribution was 0.7 mm/yr for 1900-2018 but only 0.52 mm/yr from 1957-2018. (A negative acceleration.)pic.twitter.com/9iigW4rJrv
