Ah you mean why do horses need farriers? Just to keep their hooves in good condition.

Hooves need to be trimmed so they don't overgrow or wear in such a way the gait is changed, which causes pain and joint strain. Left untreated for too long, badly kept hooves cause permanent damage. Farriers also looks for infection, stones stuck in the hooves, soft spots, etc.
