We've interviewed many men and women who have served our country over the years. Not one was a loser. They were all heroes. Here are a few.

I remember the Vindman boys fondly. Theirs is the story of America at its best.

As @pbump of @washingtonpost unearthed today, Army Lt. Col. Vindman, who is testifying before Congress today, was featured as a young boy in the @KenBurns Academy Award-nominated doc "The Statue of Liberty" in 1985. Watch the full clip on UNUM here: to.pbs.org/2Ns6HJQ

The way Lt. Col. Alex Vindman has been treated is shameful. I hope the next president decorates this American hero with the highest honors. I met Alex as a young boy for my 1985 film on the Statue of Liberty, and I had the chance to thank him for his service early this year.

This is a coup against the United States of America, incited by Donald Trump. He should be impeached by the House as soon as possible and convicted and removed by the Senate just as quickly. This is not us, the U.S.

My thoughts on Florida House Bill 999: America’s greatness stems not from its suppression of our complicated history but our willingness to engage and understand it. Each generation has helped further bring to life the values articulated in the Declaration… (1/3)

We are at a critical point in our country’s history. If you do not understand the complexities and promise of our past, you cannot imagine a better future. We either invest in the humanities, including history and civics, or we forfeit our democracy.

Historian Barbara Fields ended the film: “the Civil War is still going on. It's still to be fought and regrettably it can still be lost.”

Greatness isn't always hard to identify. Ben Ferencz carried it with him throughout his life. He'll be missed.

Ben Ferencz, the last surviving Nuremberg prosecutor, has died. He shared his story in The US and the Holocaust. Here's a clip from the film.

By trying to dictate what teachers can and cannot teach, Florida House Bill 999 is an assault on the very liberties articulated by the Founders and something that all Americans should speak out against. (3/3)

The gov’s official name for the Civil War is the "War of the Rebellion." These men led that rebellion, wished to preserve slavery, and were responsible for the deaths of thousands of LOYAL Americans. That’s the opposite of "Winning, Victory, Freedom." nytimes.com/2020/06/10/mag?

President Carter shared this story with me about the Camp David Accords when he joined us in 2013 for a national celebration of the Gettysburg Address. It is a beautiful story that speaks to our country's history.

When Ken Burns asked every living president to recite the Gettysburg Address in 2013, Pres. Carter shared this story about Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin and the Camp David Accords. We are thinking about the President and thought all would appreciate this wonderful story.

Tomorrow we celebrate July 4 but let’s remember that the Union collapsed over slavery and the Civil War. Today is the anniversary of the end of the bloodiest battle of that war. See below.

On this day in 1863, the bloodiest meeting in the Civil War ended. The Battle of Gettysburg was a pivotal moment in US history & remains a stark reminder of the profound costs of a divided nation. Learn more via our Gettysburg playlist: pbs.org/kenburns/unum/

The history of the Holocaust includes the banning of books. Maus is a work of art that has helped generations understand Nazi brutality and how they dictated what people could think, read and say. When you become fearful of ideas you forfeit your freedom.

John Madden was one of the most consequential men in the history of pro football. Super Bowl winning coach, legendary broadcaster, successful entrepreneur, and all around good guy, he cemented my love for football in so many ways. He’ll be missed.

To protect the dream of America we must confront the reality of America. That reality starts with slavery & continues to the killing of George Floyd. We must end police brutality & the racism against Black Americans - education, criminal justice, economic… #BlackLivesMatter

Seems like a good moment to remind people that it is not ok for anyone to make antisemitic statements. This stuff matters. Take a look at the clip we shared on our site

Antisemitism is neither new nor uncommon, but when a public figure espouses antisemitic statements it gives others permission to do the same. This clip from our film “THE U.S. AND THE HOLOCAUST” shows us what can happen when antisemitism is minimized or ignored:

History isn’t something that should be suppressed. You can’t run away from the past - it’s there as something lived and to be shared. Leaning is a form of freedom. We should embrace what’s challenging and learn together.
