It’s absolutely news that the prosecutor, Jonathan Roth, is dropping out given the fact that the trial ended in two acquittals and two hung juries and b/c the govt intends to try the case again. But why overstate that news? Why try to make more of it than the facts bear out?

The temptation to overstate and exaggerate news that is already relevant w/o extra juice is so strong and so pernicious. For example, yesterday it came out the junior prosecutor in the Michigan kidnap case is withdrawing. He is 100% not the lead prosecutor, and yet:

What is the significance of a single text from an unidentified person in a chat with Oath Keepers mentioning Rep Jackson? What does it really tell us about the alleged conspiracy? Or is it just a good headline?

This is a VERY thorough retort to a recent piece about the DoJ's case against the Oath Keepers, focusing particularly on the Quick Reaction Force (QRF) stationed in Virginia on Jan 6. Worth a read for those who have been following the case.

Today is my last day at BuzzFeed News. I'm proud of the work I produced there over 2.5 years with such a great group of journalists. I'm in New York at the moment but heading back to Ukraine soon and starting a new job on Monday. More on that and other things TK.

Following a complaint, the FEC penalized two LLCs for funneling $200K in secret funds to a super PAC and the super PAC for accepting the illegal funds. This is the first time that the FEC has penalized LLCs and super PACs for making and receiving straw donations.
