Earthquakes form a ripple effect much like throwing a rock in a pond. Watch the waves from the 6.4 earthquake in Puerto Rico roll across the USA as recorded by the USArray Transportable Array seismic network. Source: USArray

As winds down, a huge shout out to for being such a welcoming society for young scientists. My UG student gave a poster, meeting some of his science idols in the process. He was enthralled and inspired.

Deep-sea fishes are fascinating and what we know about how they feed could fit in a thimble. My student will give a poster (p1-227) that highlights his work on tooth function from a materials and robotics perspective.

Comparative Biomechanics just lost one of its founders, Stephen A. Wainwright. His humanity, generosity, and creativity lit a thousand mind-fires that are ablaze across wide swaths of biology, engineering, and art. With respect and gratitude.

Whales’ large bodies help them consume their prey at high efficiencies, a more than decade-long study now shows, but their gigantism is limited by prey availability and foraging efficiency. Read more in Science:

Steve Wainwright, one of the founders of , friend and mentor to countless people in science, has died. He was brilliant, funny, artistic and kind, and he was a master of bow ties, hilarious antics, raunchy limericks, and clever ideas. His spirit lives on.

The lab and I are looking at muscle strain patterns during steady swimming in rainbow trout. This video shows how strain rate intensifies as the propulsive wave travels down the body (blue=shortening on top/R, red=shortening on bottom/L).

To study the hydrodynamic function of shark skin, we made a flexible airfoil from mako shark skin which we moved with a robotic controller. A leading edge vortex (LEV) forms that is weaker when denticles are removed!

Every scientific project will be redone in its entirety about 10-20 times from start to publication. Plan your work flow accordingly, e.g. a piece of R code that takes a data file and produces the analysis and figure/s. Change the data? Just rerun the code.
