For the third super bowl in a row I saw an "ugh don't call it sportsball" post before having seen any "lol sportsball" posts. That fragility from a position of dominance really steams my hams.

Following up on few of the subthreads: I understand that "sportsball" reminds some of you of being bullied for other interests. It's been years since I've said it on Twitter, in part because I know it bothers people I care about--though I didn't realize just how much.

But here's the thing: If you find the use of the word "sportsball"--not directed at you, just free-floating out in the world--genuinely hurtful, you can mute that word and pretty much be done. (This would also mute the "ugh sportsball" tweets, so I might actually do it myself.)

Football, by contrast, cannot be opted out of. It is everywhere--social media, workplaces, grocery stores, restaurants. It's not like seeing a football sends me into a panic attack or anything, but being surrounded by it reminds me of some bad times.

So when people call football a silly name or mention how much they don't care about it, maybe that's not great. But they're not calling you out, they're coping. Bear in mind that they don't have "mute it" as an option, and maybe just...let it slide?

Anyway, I really do hope the game is awesome and you have fun watching it. Football's going to exist either way, so the least it can do is make my friends happy.

I see and empathise with your loved experience, but the qualm I take with “sportsball” is that it’s deployment is often emblematic of entrenched classism common in liberal academic spaces that correlates the interests of the working classes with poor character/low intelligence

Fully support you on this. It is a reaction from a position of dominance.

they're not mad at being called out, they're their eyes at people that say "sportsball" for being pretentious
