We just witnessed a system built on white supremacy validate the terroristic acts of a white supremacist. This only further validates the need to abolish our current system. White supremacy cannot be reformed.

All he had to do to stay completely safe was not walk into a crowd of people literally protesting for their right to stay alive, armed with an AR 15 and the entitlement of a white 17 year old who believes they are less important than what might happen to a fucking autozone.

  7. To be clear, in case the above reads to anyone as passive or resigned, I am not those things. I am just upset about this verdict in this moment. I recognize that being just upset, and not in greater personal danger of violence as a result of this verdict, is white privilege.

I think there is room to be an abolitionist, to say that people shouldn't be tried as adults for things they did as children, and also to say, "Until we can do public safety better, our system of criminal punishment should not be an undisguised tool of white supremacy."

I once did a sharing how I sometimes wrap kelp around myself when surfing to stay put against the current, like otters do when sleeping. Illustrator Lily Kang just created a piece inspired by my story for an auction supporting reef & kelp restoration. 💙

A girl and otter float in the ocean holding hands as they sleep, kelp wrapped around their bellies to keep them from drifting away with the tide.

Nearly a decade after my concussion, I think my benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is coming back. Anyone else out there gone through a recurrence?

Academia, we spend a lot of gleeful energy retrospectively castigating individual bad actors and relatively none addressing the structures that incentivize bad actions and protect bad actors. It’s almost like we collectively are only mad about this when someone gets caught.
