Idea: instead of carbon offsets, airlines and energy companies should give customers a chance to donate to the victims of climate change that their products are responsible for

"We have to stop thinking we can be carbon-neutral in the UK and invest in oil exploration outside the UK. That’s not good enough, that’s hypocrisy.” climate I suggest we use words 'UK-caused emissions' at least as often as 'UK emissions'

If offsetting a flight to Oz by paying $50 really works then I'd gladly pay $100 to make my flight carbon negative. Flying more would then be the pathway to Net Zero. Clearly nonsense. Offering offsetts at this price is very misleading.

16 more jobs lost at BiFab last week and fewer jobs in Scotlands renewable economy than five years ago. Time for more from the Scottish Government than Just Transition as a theme.

Some offsets are fraudulent, many overstate their net carbon reduction, bad offsets distort the carbon market by suppressing prices, and we do not need offsets as much as we think. We can fly less, while preserving the good we do in the world.

  13. (it's quite horrible that the most common climate-related argument made for "educating girls" relates to population growth and its presumed effect on future emissions, rather than recognising that it is our past and present emissions taking girls out of school in the first place)

  16. We care about climate breakdown because of the harms it causes. So why don't we care more about fixing some of the harms we've already caused?

This study from 2016 may have been over-optimistic? "If deforestation is no longer a factor, this leaves more scope for the beef industry to reduce its emissions, the researchers say, and these savings could be further propelled by increases in demand."

Incidentally, there are two components to population growth: birth rate and longevity. In rich nations, where longevity is rising but the birth rate (mostly) is not, almost all the talk is about birth rate, and you seldom hear a word about longevity. I wonder why.
