    44. People need to speak up more. They need to tell their stories in whatever form—writing, video, art. Those of who write can’t tell everyone’s stories. Thank you for making time to read this thread. 🌺

    43. ... It really opened my eyes to how fluid our identities are, and how much our identity is influenced by who we surround ourselves with and the social milieu we exist within.”

    42. ... Ideology is identity. When we embrace something as truth, that becomes part of our identity and it has nothing to do with logic or reason. …

    41. When asked about stereotypes he hears when people learn he was in a cult (6:11), Chris said that people often say “Wow, you seem so intelligent!” “And it’s not about that. ...

    40. YouTube suggested this video to me the other day: It features a guy named Chris who was a member of the Bhuddafield cult from 1990–2006. I was in a Cult for 16 Years. Ask Me Anything.

    39. But it also creates e-celebs who abuse en route to seeking personal power, not dialogue and change. And we’re all part of that problem because leaders only have power when they have followers.

    38. In some ways the Internet has been great because it allows people like me with no platform to simply create a platform and speak.

    37. It’s even worse when they see people claiming to speak for them when they do not. There is no single narrative for any “community” or identity group. Sometimes there are common themes, but people are individuals.

    36. Maybe not every day. But what I’ve learned in listening to the stories that other people tell me because I am now A Writer is that people feel alone when they don’t see anyone telling stories that resonate with them. They feel alone when they don’t tell their stories.

    35. What I’ve come to understand over the past ~8 years is that if you don’t like the resources that are out there or the stories that others are telling about your identity or your life experiences, then you can’t wait for someone else to tell those stories. You must speak up.

    34. This is all because I put myself out there. I dared to be A Writer. I had no credentials, no formal training, no job, no funding. Even more hilarious, I was in the early years of a medical mystery whose ending still hasn’t been written. I was ill.

    30. When I launched what I thought would be my “little” blog I had no idea that eventually my writing would be assigned reading at Yale, would be quoted in books and academic papers, and be read by people all over the world.

    29. And let’s be real—sometimes stories are told by outsiders because they’re the ones with the money to tell them. 😕

    28. Other times it takes an outsider to tell stories because people in the community are too afraid to tell them.

    26. While it’s true that creators & educators who have experienced or witnessed things first hand can offer a perspective that those who haven’t cannot, it is false that people who have not experienced/witnessed things first hand cannot tell those stories and cannot educate.

    25. When most people say they want more representation in media they're not saying they only want more minority creators who can only tell minority stories.
