I wrote a piece for Palladium about the video game industry, the increasingly exploitative tools it uses to gain/retain users, and why we need change.

I'm moving to Berkeley! Related: It's difficult to grasp the natural beauty of the US without driving on I-70 from Denver to where it dead-ends near Sulphurdale, Utah If you see a light blue Subaru with a LaTeX bumper sticker, it's probably me : )

Do you think that humanity would progress faster if everyone was less scared of death?

The aesthetic of male group vocals is powerful – I get shivers from *both* high schoolers singing the Halo theme song in the bathroom () and men singing sea shanties ()

Was talking to a friend of mine who plays semi-pro Rocket League about this piano piece I'm learning, and he goes "Yeah man, just gotta put in more hours and you'll get there" Quite empowering

Competitive gamers mentally separate natural talent from the number of hours played, which is strange when compared to traditional sports. Part of the zeitgeist that talent doesn't get you very far compared to raw input

From a linguistics perspective, it is absolutely fascinating that singing in English always sounds American, nomatter the nationality of the singer. Why do the two coincide so closely?

Got to hang out with a 2 and half year old today, and good god did this kid like to spin – why is that a thing? Why do kids like spinning? Is it an inbuilt positive valence for altered states of consciousness? Maybe a learning process for movement? Kids are strange

Anyone know if there's a way (application or otherwise) to take the set of people that a given account is following and make it a list?

Becoming 'attached' to material objects like clothes and cars just seems like our brains subconsciously assigning them an increasing amount of personhood

Economics originally refered to household operations. It’s a greek word meaning household management. Firms grew up out of home-quartered businesses (merchants, agriculture), hence the relation.

Lmao who the fuck came up with "home economics" as the phrase to describe cleaning, cooking, and sewing

She (probably accidentally) forced me to realize and accept the probabilistic nature of suburban death and disability from then on, and that subject matter has never really bothered me since

e.g. recently, I was randomly reminded of an interaction I had in 2nd grade with a teacher – I asked her about how it felt being middle aged, she in turn responded with, "How are you so sure that you're not middle aged?" and I was totally bewildered

It's always strange to retrospectively realize how the teachers of our youth were not mere automatons disseminating knowledge, but rather people who imprinted themselves on us

Sometimes I wonder just how different the subjective experience of being a non-human mammal is, and then I remember that my dog will stop and sniff something in the grass for 40 fucking seconds straight that I can't even tell exists

Suburban youth vibes were 'let's hang out today' and then spontaneously figuring shit out to do while physically in the same space Some of my best memories and experiences were birthed from this process, sad to realize almost everything 'fun' becomes pre-planned

Huge bummer that there's no real adult equivalent of pre-collegiate, unscheduled, unbounded 'hanging out'
