I know as a resident I’ve really valued being at the fac dev workshops for CBME! I would love more opportunities to break down those barriers and create spaces where we can learn from each other.

Also many differences between sport and medicine. The stakes can be very different (lose a game vs. lose a life), and in the clinical world there is another most important party at play - the patient.

A3. I don’t think so. I think that I’ve found value while reading business books about coaching/leadership 📖 The template & fundamentals apply ✅

You’ve touched on something I’ve been thinking about too. Fundamentally in sport if you lose, you are typically the one most hurt by it... But with medicine the fundamental aspect of our work being tied to the care of others makes it very different re: risk tolerance.

A2. A successful coaching relationship for me is when I’m allowed to discover something new about myself. It truly depends on the coach’s ability to ask powerful questions.

Here is the trifold pamphlet from Joan Sargeant complete with coaching tips - I particularly like "consider coaching as the skill of offering solutions"

Love that! This emphasizes to me that the coach needs to be in a too. We all have room for improvement, and we can help each other work on it.

Having worked in medical patient experience for years before starting medical school, the only thing I'd say is missing to that equation is "mutual and whole-hearted belief that you can both benefit/learn from each other"

GREAT Q. Tough alchemy to do. No easy answer. Some guesses: 1-Make assessmt low stakes w many/many data pts from many/many people. 2-Remove hierarchy from coaching when possible 3-Culture change w great paper on this:

Very complex! Totally agree. It will look different for different learners too. The effort part is big, shown through time, consideration/kindness, as is reciprocity (I show vulnerability so you know you can be vulnerable too).

Good : set high expectations, challenge us, don’t let us cheat ourselves, give meaningful feedback, ask questions to make us think (a lot), are present, allow mistakes to be learning opportunities...make us better.

A2: great question - what I appreciated was (1) I learned myself how to ask better questions and (2) also appreciated the it evoked

I'm just happy we have newer tools to help in - help us to be better coaches: an excellent example is feedback model from Joan Sargeant's work

Coaching is telling me why I made a mistake and correcting the process that lead to it, as opposed to just that I made a mistake and what the correct answer/ action A1

Part of it to me is that we had the relationship built though, where she knew my abilities from the first year. A key part of coaching seems to be the relationship aspect - something to dig into!
