I know this is usually just my biased impression, but this year, the "teams play better against me" hypothesis holds with p-value 0.0005

ESPN just reported it is losing subscribers at the fastest pace in it's history -- accelerating from 1% to 4.5% in the past year alone

Love this idea of automatic early tax rebates whenever the US unemployment rate jumps enough to signal recession. Austerity in Europe after the GFC and spending cuts from the sequester in 2013 in the US suggest that government sometimes also wants to cut back when it should not

If the Apple watch could detect early onset of heart attack symptoms, that would probably be enough reason by itself for me to buy one (even considering that I'm not really in the age range for that).

Dr. Topol says that wearable devices could eventually eliminate the need for non-ICU hospital stays. Would do a lot for bringing down health insurance costs. Also, seems like a strong argument for Apple's wearables segment.

I'd guess that mid-2000s SaaS companies faced that same challenge, but it was a mistake to view off-premises software as a bad idea when it was really just too early. Now, being off-premises is much more of an advantage than a disadvantage. 4/4

As usual, the oversight probably stems from over-reliance on own experiences, in this case, working on an AWS-like service for enterprises in the early 2000s and seeing strong reluctance from potential customers toward using software that is run off-premises. 3/

Conventional software designers have to correctly foresee all the problems that customers might run into using the product and solve them ahead of time, whereas SaaS companies can watch customers use a mostly-correct solution and make fixes on the fly. 2/

Reading 's discussion of some SaaS companies, I definitely missed the key engineering advantage that these companies have over their conventional software competitors, one that allows SaaS companies to develop software much more quickly. 1/

The assumption that there should be a clear dividing line here seems very "lawyerly" to me. If there were a simple decision tree, I'd bet the founders would have spotted it and written it down. Instead, they gave some examples and ask the Senate to cluster new ones case-by-case

Huge step: Steelmaker SSAB will bring CO2-free steel on the market by 2026, speeding up from earlier goal of 2035. The firm's entire production will be converted to hydrogen direct reduction by 2040, single-handedly cutting CO2 by 7% in Finland and 10% in Sweden.

The tech industry across Canada is booming. And one of the biggest reasons is U.S. immigration policy. The Trump administration has made it harder for high-skilled workers to get visas. Canada, meanwhile, has been making it easier.

Some updates on the state of sports betting around the US. The discussion focuses on profitable betting, but I can't help but think the opportunity here is for a book to embrace the new types of betting markets that others are slow to offer, e.g., more player props, 2nd half, etc

Some updates on the gaming world. Especially interested to learn that Mixer (owned by Microsoft) is now paying for some content, in order to pull it away from Twitch (owned by Amazon). Will be interesting to see if this spreads — more paid (and less ad supported) content.
