Excited to finally post this pre-print from a collaboration project with , Elisa Pabon, Ed Vogel and Harriet de Wit — we show that THC impairs visual working memory performance and increases mind wandering.

Making music using barcode readers to transduce spatial frequencies into auditory ones (needs sound on). Poster / demo night idea for any musicians out there? (Plus, how great would this be as a conference party DJ set.....??)

I am seeking MA & Ph.D. students, who are interested in memory & attention for my lab at Sabancı University in Istanbul (). I would appreciate it if you can share this link with students who may be interested:

To make data collection methods transparent and available, it is now possible to publish a detailed protocol, which can be cited in subsequent journal articles. We have now done this for our EEG recording methods. 4/n

In a new preprint (), we model working memory performance over short and long retention intervals. We find that the inability to sustain attention over long retention intervals leads to worse WM performance

New preprint with Emma Bsales and . We show that covert attention speeds the N2pc component, providing evidence that attention speeds individuation of a visual target. See thread for a quick summary (1/6)

My open science favorite metaphor (from ) is that it’s a buffet! Anything is better than nothing! Pick and choose what you’re comfortable with: preregistration, posting data, or just making stimuli available. I wish more people knew that open science isn’t all or none!

Today I was on an open science panel on our department retreat. We didn’t get into a lot of detail on the topic, so I figured I’d share some of my thoughts here:

Does THC impair working memory? The literature would say no despite the “citation bias” in which only studies with a significant effect are cited. Here, we show WM is impaired and why the literature doesn’t (hint, use of outdated cognitive tasks that plague clinical research).

While these results don’t feel that surprising anecdotally, we also conducted a literature review and showed that >70% of drug manipulations showed a null effect on the most common working memory tasks (e.g. digit span).

What does it mean to be an activity-silent representation in short-term memory tasks? We make the case that silent memories are stored in LTM. We draw on evidence that LTM plays a role "WM" tasks, especially when our focus is diverted from remembered items. W/ Ed Vogel
