Ah, I see Linus' grovelling apology was due to awkward questions from the New Yorker. https://www.newyorker.com/science/elements/after-years-of-abusive-e-mails-the-creator-of-linux-steps-aside …

Now I am substantially more conflicted about his resignation. On one hand, Linus is an asshole and the pursuit of excellence he so publicly called for resulted in...Linux and git. On the other hand, the article says Python is a model community.

We're talking about the same Python community that was so toxic that they caused their BDFL to resign over assignment expressions, right?

All in all, I'm not sure anything is going to actually change in Linux development Linux doesn't need Linus to continue congealing. But I don't think the article understands *why* Linux doesn't need Linus.

Linux is (and has been for a while!) a corporate sponsored collective development effort to hoover up donated development time for corporate gain.

I started this thread about the economics of open source earlier today on an unrelated whim, but it ties into this thread nicely.https://twitter.com/kchoudhu/status/1042662615544156161 …

I see everyone hyperventilating about how much cash Linus gets from the Linux Foundation. Once you realize Torvalds' role in the Linux ecosystem, the money makes perfect sense.https://twitter.com/bcantrill/status/1042615905052549123 …

He's not getting paid for engineering excellence. He's getting paid for making everyone forget that they're contributing to corporate welfare for free. I guarantee you the big commercial vendors have looked at the expense of his salary and thought "holy crap, that's CHEAP."

So that continued investment -- picodollars on its actual return -- will continue no matter. Nothing will change in Linux development.

I'm not really sure where I'm going with this, other than to say that your engineering hours are probably better spent on communities that value you better. FWIW, I hear
@FreeBSD is pretty cool.2 replies 0 retweets 2 likesShow this thread
