i began to wonder how widely prevalent this is. it seems like a thing that's rarely discussed, especially in tech. but i would wager that actually, a lot of folks have either cried at work or struggled not to cry and then gone somewhere private to do it. it's normal! it's human!

There's a wooded area with walking paths near a building I worked at that one of my coworkers referred to as "the crying forest." All the men were like "the what now?" and all the women were like "oh yeah, the crying forest."

It's (wrongly) seen as a sign of weakness, when it's simply a sign of emotional-cognizance and benign vulnerability. I'm certain women are subjected to scrutiny for this, and I can't imagine how endemic and frustrating it must be. Men are also subjected to this. It's poison.

I am an anger crier and while I've gotten much much better over time, for the first few years I warned my supervisors and reminded them that if I cry just keep going

I once started crying when I was told I'm being fired (long time ago & the company went out of business not long afterwards
) and had to work very hard to stifle it. It's sad that we're supposed to always pretend to be stoic or "strong" or whatever -
A whooping WHOOHOOO for emotions at work (and everywhere else). I truly believe they make my work better and be it only bc they point at the things that matter. Love to you both! <3
